Compassionate Leadership & Building a Culture of Democracy in Grassroots Women’s Organizations

This keynote explores how compassionate leadership can cultivate strong democratic cultures within grassroots women’s organizations. Drawing on more than fifteen years of experience as a board member and NGO representative in national and international civil society organizations in Denmark, Dr. Fariba Parsa offers a deeply informed perspective on how democratic values are practiced—not just proclaimed—within nonprofit institutions.
The talk is grounded in her leadership roles and engagement with organizations such as the National Council of Women in Denmark, ActionAid, the Danish Association for the United Nations, the Danish National Council for Human Rights, and the National Council for European Policy. Through these experiences, Dr. Parsa examines how Denmark’s advanced democratic culture has shaped nonprofit governance, accountability, inclusion, and participatory decision-making—providing valuable lessons for grassroots women’s organizations operating in diverse political and cultural contexts.
At the core of the keynote is the argument that compassion is not a soft leadership trait, but a strategic democratic practice. Compassionate leadership fosters trust, shared responsibility, ethical governance, and resilience—especially in women-led organizations working under pressure, limited resources, or political constraints. By combining institutional experience with reflective analysis, the keynote bridges theory and practice to show how democratic norms can be built from the ground up.
This keynote is designed for grassroots women’s organizations, NGOs, civil society leaders, foundations, democracy practitioners, and international development actors seeking to strengthen internal democratic culture and sustainable leadership.
