Empowering Change

Dr. Fariba Parsa: Advocate for Equality and Democracy

DR. FARIBA PARSA

I am an independent scholar, writer, and civil society strategist focused on women’s leadership and democratic movements in authoritarian and post-authoritarian contexts, with a particular emphasis on Iran, Afghanistan, and the broader Middle East.

My work bridges rigorous research with real-world impact. I collaborate with grassroots women’s organizations, international NGOs, and policy communities to strengthen leadership capacity, sharpen strategy, and translate collective action into sustainable democratic outcomes.

I am the founder of Women’s E-Learning in Leadership (WELL), a nonprofit organization that connects and collaborates with women in Iran and Afghanistan through online education, mentorship, and community-building programs.

What I Do

01

Research & Analysis

I produce research and policy-relevant analysis on:

  • Women’s roles in democratic movements
  • Authoritarianism, political Islam, and regime change
  • Civil society under repression
  • U.S. and international policy toward Iran and the Middle East

My writing appears in policy journals, media outlets, and academic forums, and is informed by long-term engagement with women activists on the ground.

02

  • Leadership development and movement building
  • Program design for high-risk environments
  • Narrative framing and advocacy strategy
  • Bridging grassroots activism with international policy spaces

03

Capacity-Building & Mentorship

Through WELL and independent initiatives, I support women leaders by:

  • Designing leadership and civic education programs
  • Providing mentorship and peer learning opportunities
  • Creating safe spaces for reflection, strategy, and collective growth

Why Women’s Leadership Matters

Women are not peripheral to democratic change—they are central to it. In authoritarian contexts, women-led movements often sustain civic resistance, preserve social trust, and articulate inclusive visions of freedom and accountability.
My work is grounded in the belief that democracy is built not only through institutions, but through people—especially women—who organize, lead, and imagine alternatives under conditions of repression.
